This document contains information pertinant to DiskTracker that for some reason wasn't or couldn't be included in the manual.
About the DiskTracker Package
The following items are included in the DiskTracker package. If any items are missing, it likely means that the DiskTracker package has been tampered with. Please visit the DiskTracker web site to acquire a new, fresh version.

• DiskTracker Extension - the installer will place this in the Extensions folder of your System Folder (DiskTracker for classic Mac OS ONLY)
• DiskTracker Registration - this folder contains everything you need to register your copy of DiskTracker

• Label Sheet Layouts - this folder contains several label sheet layouts
• Label Templates - this folder contains a number of label templates for different types of media

• DiskTracker Support - software support is just one click away
• DiskTracker Partners - information about software and hardware of potential interest to DiskTracker users
Please make sure that all of these items are present before you upload unregistered copies of the program to online services or internet FTP sites. We would be most grateful, however, if you would simply distribute the DiskTracker Installer, as downloaded from the DiskTracker web site.
Installing DiskTracker
Installing DiskTracker 2 is simple - simply copy the software to your hard drive.
On Mac OS X, copy the “DiskTracker” folder from the source disk image to the Applications folder (or whichever other install location is desired).
On Classic Mac OS, copy the “DiskTracker” folder from the source folder to the Applications folder (or whichever other install location is desired). If use of the DiskTracker Extension is desired, copy the “DiskTracker Extension” icon into the Extension folder of the System Folder.
About the DiskTracker Manual
DiskTracker includes a manual in PDF format, which can be viewed using Preview.app (Mac OS X) or Adobe Acrobat Reader (Mac OS X or Classic Mac OS).
Microsoft Word and PDF versions of the user manual are available for download from the DiskTracker web site.
Memory allocation issues — Classic MacOS Versions of DiskTracker Only!
On Classic MacOS versions of DiskTracker, the default memory allocation is set to 4000K. On PowerMacintoshes, this goes up to nearly 4800K if Virtual Memory is turned off or Connectix RAMDoubler is not installed. This default allocation should be sufficient for most users because of DiskTracker's built in virtual memory system. In fact, DiskTracker should run acceptably with the minimum memory allocation of 1500K. For instance, we often work with a 16MB catalog file using only 1500K of RAM (this catalog file contains catalogs of over 60 CD-ROMs, totaling nearly 300,000 files). Naturally, increasing the memory partition will cause an increase in speed when dealing with large catalog files.
Because DiskTracker uses your hard drive space to store large catalog files, you should be sure that you have around one and a half times more disk space available on your disk than the size of the saved catalog file. This 1.5x figure comes from the fact that the data in DiskTracker files is stored differently than the data in DiskTracker's active memory — the data on disk is optimized for size, while the data in memory is optimized for speed). So, if you run into trouble running DiskTracker, make sure that there is sufficient space available on your hard drive.
Shareware issues
DiskTracker is a shareware program ($30). Registration is handled by Kagi Shareware. For more information, see the Registration Read Me in the DiskTracker Registration folder. Please register DiskTracker if you use it - we spent a good amount of time and effort working on this project.
Registered users of DiskTracker 1.x
To upgrade your registration code to DiskTracker 2.x, please purchase a DiskTracker 2.x upgrade. The cost is $10 for a single user license. Note that your DiskTracker 1.x registration code will not work with DiskTracker 2.x. See the registration read me for how to purchase a DiskTracker 2.x upgrade.
Why is there an upgrade fee, you ask? We are not fans of upgrade fees, certainly. They aren't very nice, both to users who purchased our software early on and supported us during the rocky first few months and to users who just purchased the software and now have to pay again.
However, note that the price of DiskTracker 2 has increased to $30. We feel this price increase is justified, because of all of the new functionality added to the software. Since new users have to pay the extra $10, we feel it is only fair that users of the old version pay the same total amount for the same functionality. It may not seem fair, and for that we're sorry. We hope you understand and continue to support hard-working shareware authors.
